Johnnie Walker Black Cask is a limited expression from Johnnie Walker that takes the standard Black Label foundation — 12-year minimum aged blended Scotch — and adds a double-char cask finishing step, amplifying the smoky and charred oak character that gives Black Label its identity into something more intense and bourbon-adjacent.

The double-char finishing deepens the char layer on the inside of the barrel beyond what standard maturation produces, drawing out more vanillin compounds and intensifying the toasted wood character. Combined with Black Label's existing Caol Ila-driven smoke, the result is a Scotch that is more charred, oaky, and bourbon-like than the standard Black Label while retaining the blend's characteristic dried fruit and spice. Frequently Asked Questions

What does double-char mean for a whisky cask?

A standard whisky cask is charred on the inside to produce the char layer that filters the spirit and imparts vanilla, caramel, and smoky character during aging. Double-char means the barrel receives a second charring after initial aging, deepening the char layer and intensifying the oak extraction compounds — producing more vanilla, more smoke, and a more intense wood character in the finished spirit.

Is Black Cask the same liquid as standard Johnnie Walker Black Label?

No — while built on the same 12-year aged blend foundation, the double-char cask finishing produces a measurably different and more intense character than the standard Black Label.
